After six years together, four storage units, three cities and almost two years of sharing a 442-square-foot studio apartment, Karen Trivette and Geof Huth finally finished unpacking.

The milestone came in March, after Ms. Trivette, 53, and Mr. Huth, 57, moved into a two-bedroom rental at 1 West Street in the Financial District. Six months later, they still seem delighted at living in a 1,100-square-foot space that holds not only everything they own, but also each other.

“I spent four years living in an apartment the same size as this room,” said Ms. Trivette, gesturing around their new living space. It would have been a challenge for anyone, but it was especially daunting for two archivists with the desire to maintain both their collections and some semblance of order. Ms. Trivette, for example, had copies of Vogue dating to the 1970s,
