It was Candlewood Lake that sold Katie and Gregory Williams on the town of New Fairfield, set in the rolling hills of upper Fairfield County, Conn. The couple, who work for an insurance agency in Bedford Hills, N.Y., were living in a one-bedroom apartment in Stamford, Conn., when they started their search for a house around Danbury. “We were driving up Route 39, and suddenly there was the lake,” Ms. Williams, 44, said. “My first thought was, ‘Wow, it’s so beautiful. I want to live here.’”

That was in 2011.
