The good folks over at Best Yet Market in Harlem notified us yesterday that they are giving away a free small cup of cappuccino or a latte on Thursday (February 17) and Friday (February 18) to shoppers  in honor of the store turning one-year old. The grocery store opened up February 4, 2010 at West 118th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. in Harlem.

So how does one get the free cup of coffee? Show this ad pictured above on your smart phone to the cashier in the bakery section and this person will give you your free cup of java. Also , you can find the ad on their Twitter or Facebook page as well.

Best Yet Market said they were offering this special “to extend their gratitude to Harlem, New York for welcoming them to this exceptional neighborhood.” Well said!

If you did not have a chance to swing by Best Yet Market, located at 118th and Frederick Douglass Blvd., today for their grand opening…not to worry. Fellow HarlemCondoLife blogger, Austin2Harlem, walked by and photographed the ceremonial event!

Several VIPs attended and ABC’s Channel 7 was present. The most notable VIP was Congressman Charlie Rangel, and of course Mr. Best too! Rangel said the new supermarket created 100 plus jobs and other speakers emphasized that Harlem is now getting quality, healthy food at low prices, including fresh produce, meat and fish.

HCL would like to add that Karrott at 117th and FDB and Organic Forever at 112th and FDB offer Harlemites healthy food options as well for reasonable prices.

This concludes the Best Yet blogging saga. May we all go forward now and shop and dine at all our local Harlem businesses! Stay tuned for a post about Chez Lucienne and upcoming films at El Museo del Barrio!

Correction: We went by the supermarket this morning for the Grand Opening. Nothing was happening. A cashier told us it is scheduled for March 5 at 10 AM. We now have more advance notice so mark your calendars!

A while back a reader provided the details on Best Yet’s grand opening! It is happening today, March 1, 2010 at 11 AM! Here are the details again:

GRAND OPENING/RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY
Best Yet Market in Harlem
2187 Frederick Douglass Blvd.
118 Street-119 Street and Frederick Douglas
Date: March 5
Time: 10 AM

And take a look at all the positive comments that have been posted regarding Harlem’s newest supermarket! It appears unanimous that most readers really like the supermarket.  I know I do!

The wait is over! Best Yet Market has opened its doors in Harlem on Frederick Douglass Blvd. between 118th and 119th Street. They opened up officially on February 4th. I went to take a quick look at the place today and from what I saw…the place is very nice! It has two levels so it is spacious. You almost feel like your grocery shopping in the suburbs.

From the looks and feel of the place, I will more than likely enjoy shopping at Best Yet in Harlem. It is not far from the B and the C subway line on 116th Street. The prices did not appear to be that much different from C Town or Central Market. They have a sizable coffee bar that will compete with you know who right next door? And Best Yet will have several cold and hot food bars, which is perfect for us Harlemites who are on the go and want more food options close to home.

If you have checked out Best Yet in Harlem, tell us what you think so far!

A reader tipped us off to the latest happenings with Best Yet in the SoHa Bldg at 118th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. Based on the information below, Best Yet is moving along and they appear to want to keep the community in the loop…and so does one of HarlemCondoLife’s readers. A big thanks to tero for the information!

It’s a rumor no more! Best Yet is coming to Harlem and it will be in the SoHa building on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 118th and 119th Street.

And thanks to a reader for giving us the heads up. Much appreciated. Now the big question I have is…when will they open for business? Hopefully it won’t take as long as it did to sign the lease!

Hurricane Irene last year failed to live up to the doomsday expectations for the city (thank goodness!), but that’s no reason to be  unprepared for Hurricane Sandy this time around.

We stupidly saw –but didn’t buy– a large flashlight in the 125th street Duane Reade yesterday when we were getting preliminary supplies, when we went back this morning all flashlights had vanished… Got the bright idea of going to United Hardware on FDB to buy an electric lantern but first we popped into Rite Aid to see what emergency supplies we could acquire there, not even knowing exactly what we wanted. We wasted 20 minutes standing in line with 2 unneeded LED powered candles as there were no flashlights , and just as we got to the front of the line, Marcus Samuelsson rushed in –what is he buying??? Harlem’s Superstar Chef must know what to buy!!–but we were so close to checkout, we couldn’t  follow him (plus that’s stalkerish anyway). Finally onto United Hardware where we were informed that they had sold out of the last battery lantern 15 minutes beforehand. All out of flashlights too.

Then we fought our way through the throngs at Best Yet–the management is trying their best to have some control and process and they had extra staff in place to facilitate checkout which is great, but the lines are long. Back out on the street we noticed brunch in full swing at many local restaurants–New Yorkers are so irrepressible –and lots of tourists nonchalantly smiling, strolling and even riding rental bikes up FDB, boy are they going to be in for a surprise later…

Only one more thing to buy–actually the most important supply, wine. The Winery is trying to keep their regular hours tonight they say, but they’ll be open at least until 6.

Everyone please be safe and smart during this sustained storm.

When I first moved to Harlem the closest thing to Fairway, Citarellas, Best Yet, Costcos etc was my favorite super market called Finefare on 116th and Malcom X Boulevard (aka Lenox Avenue or Sixth Avenue) right by the two train.  I still visit it from time to time.

So I was pleased the other day as I walked by 112th and Malcom X Boulevard to see that Finefare has taken over the supermarket that used to be there (I don’t recall what it was).

So if you live in the area Finefare deserves a chance.  They carry a great selection of fresh fruits and vegetables and healthy frozen fare.  The prices are great and the employees are nice.

So make sure to stop by and pay them a visit today.
