{"id":1025,"date":"2008-12-22T21:15:20","date_gmt":"2008-12-23T02:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/?p=1025"},"modified":"2010-09-03T18:32:58","modified_gmt":"2010-09-03T22:32:58","slug":"in-celebration-of-principle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/?p=1025","title":{"rendered":"In Celebration of Principle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1026\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1026\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1026\" title=\"kwanzaasymbols\" src=\"http:\/\/site2098.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/12\/kwanzaasymbols.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Kwanza Symbols from www.officialkwanzaawebsite.org\" width=\"300\" height=\"279\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1026\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kwanza Symbols from www.officialkwanzaawebsite.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By NativeNewYorker<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\"><span class=\"style21\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial;\">For the past several years, my family and I have celebrated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.officialkwanzaawebsite.org\" target=\"_blank\">Kwanzaa<\/a> as well as Christmas.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Kwanzaa, which is neither religious nor political, was established to celebrate African American culture.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It begins on December 26<sup>th<\/sup> and lasts for seven days, ending on January 1<sup>st<\/sup>.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>At the heart of Kwanzaa stand the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"style6style3style7\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.officialkwanzaawebsite.org\/NguzoSaba.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Nguzo Saba<\/a>, which in Swahili means the Seven Principles; o<\/span><\/span><span class=\"style21\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial;\">n each day a different principle is celebrated.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>They are: <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial;\">Umoja<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial;\"> (Unity); <strong>Kujichagulia<\/strong> (Self-Determination); <strong>Ujima<\/strong> (Collective Work and Responsibility); <strong>Ujamaa<\/strong> (Cooperative Economics); <strong>Nia<\/strong> (Purpose); <strong>Kuumba<\/strong> (Creativity); and <strong>Imani<\/strong> (Faith). I have come to value the opportunity to reflect on these principles at the end of each year, remembering the contributions of our ancestors and reaffirming my own commitment to my family and my community.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>This year we will host a gathering on the second day of Kwanzaa, honoring Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), as it is my daughter\u2019s favorite principle.
