Recreation Commissioner\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/broadwayworld.com\/people\/Adrian_Benepe\/\">Adrian Benepe<\/a>\u00a0recently\u00a0cut the ribbon on $7 million in improvements to the restored bandshell and amphitheater at <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Marcus Garvey Park\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marcus_Garvey_Park\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Marcus Garvey Park<\/a>. \u00a0Attendees included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Borough President\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Borough_President\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Manhattan Borough President<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/broadwayworld.com\/people\/Scott_Stringer\/\">Scott Stringer<\/a><\/li>\n<li>City Council Member <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Inez Dickens\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inez_Dickens\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Inez Dickens<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Community Board 11 Chair Matthew Washington<\/li>\n<li>Marcus Park Alliance President and Secretary\/Treasurer Carla MacIntosh and Valerie Jo Bradley<\/li>\n<li><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"City Parks Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/City_Parks_Foundation\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">City Parks Foundation<\/a> Executive Director David Rivel<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/broadwayworld.com\/people\/Mary_Rodgers\/\">Mary Rodgers<\/a>\u00a0Guettel, daughter of the composer\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/broadwayworld.com\/people\/Richard_Rodgers\/\">Richard Rodgers<\/a>\u00a0and executive board member of the Rodgers Family Foundation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Performances included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/broadwayworld.com\/people\/Laura_Osnes\/\">Laura Osnes<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/broadwayworld.com\/people\/Colin_Donnell\/\">Colin Donnell<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/broadwayworld.com\/people\/Roundabout_Theater_Company\/\">Roundabout Theater Company<\/a>&#8216;s production of Anything Goes,<\/li>\n<li>Trombonist Craig Harris who played an original composition called &#8220;Harlem,&#8221; and<\/li>\n<li>A performance by the P.S. 166 \/\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/broadwayworld.com\/people\/Richard_Rodgers\/\">Richard Rodgers<\/a>\u00a0School Fifth Grade Honors Choir.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The now restored\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/broadwayworld.com\/people\/Richard_Rodgers\/\">Richard Rodgers<\/a>\u00a0Amphitheater was made possible primarily by the\u00a0\u00a0Rodgers Family Foundation for its generous $1 million contribution to this project. \u00a0 \u00a0Additional grants are available to support community performances and the commissioning of new work for the space.<\/p>\n<p>New amphitheater features include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A wider stage that is much closer to the audience,<\/li>\n<li>A large, multi-purpose area backstage with changing rooms and restrooms for the performers,<\/li>\n<li>An improved seating area with seatbacks built of a durable recycled plastic, and<\/li>\n<li>A fabric canopy to shield a large portion of the audience from the hot summer sun.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Summer programming includes<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A performance of Shakespeare&#8217;s Henry V from August 5-8,<\/li>\n<li>Music performances with Ryan Leslie, Funkmaster Flex and others from August 9-11,<\/li>\n<li>Dance performances with the Cecilia Marta Dance Company, Forces of Nature Dance Theater and others from August 12-13, and<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/broadwayworld.com\/people\/Charlie_Parker\/\">Charlie Parker<\/a>\u00a0Jazz Festival on August 27 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/nycparksdepartment#p\/u\/75\/v_aQR0lXvIs\" target=\"_blank\">see video<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>About Richard Rogers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Composer\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/broadwayworld.com\/people\/Richard_Rodgers\/\">Richard Rodgers<\/a>\u00a0(1902-79) enjoyed a spectacular career that spanned more than six decades. His hits ranged from the silver screens of Hollywood to the bright lights of Broadway, London and beyond. He was the recipient of countless awards, including Pulitzers, Tonys, Oscars, Grammys and Emmys. He wrote more than 900 published songs and forty <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Broadway theatre\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Broadway_theatre\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Broadway musicals<\/a>, including The Sound of Music, Oklahoma!, The King and I, and South Pacifi<a href=\"http:\/\/broadwayworld.com\/people\/C._Rodgers\/\">C. Rodgers<\/a>&#8216; childhood home, at 3 West 120th Street, overlooked what was then called Mt.
