{"id":12670,"date":"2011-06-25T00:58:38","date_gmt":"2011-06-25T04:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/?p=12670"},"modified":"2011-06-25T08:16:50","modified_gmt":"2011-06-25T12:16:50","slug":"breaking-news-ny-approves-marriage-for-same-sex-couples-happy-harlem-pride","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/?p=12670","title":{"rendered":"Breaking News &#8211; NY Approves Marriage For Same Sex Couples &#8211; Happy Harlem Pride!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/2011\/06\/25\/breaking-news-ny-approves-marriage-for-same-sex-couples-happy-harlem-pride\/screen-shot-2011-06-25-at-12-32-36-am\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12674\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12674\" title=\"marriage equality 2\" src=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/screen-shot-2011-06-25-at-12-32-36-am.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"306\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/screen-shot-2011-06-25-at-12-32-36-am.png 306w, http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/screen-shot-2011-06-25-at-12-32-36-am-300x238.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nBy HarlemGuy<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago we reported on <a href=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/2011\/06\/23\/event-reminder-come-celebrate-gay-pride-in-harlem-aka-harlem-pride-june-24-25-26\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harlem Pride<\/a> events taking place this weekend during New York&#8217;s Gay Pride celebration.<\/p>\n<p>Little did we know that there would be an additional reason to celebrate.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight in a historic vote the NY State Senate has approved marriage for same sex couples, which represents a tremendous opportunity. \u00a0New York Becomes the Seventh U.S. Jurisdiction to Allow Gay and<a title=\" Lesbian Couples\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/issues\/marriage.asp\">\u00a0Lesbian Couples<\/a>\u00a0to Marry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/2011\/06\/25\/breaking-news-ny-approves-marriage-for-same-sex-couples-happy-harlem-pride\/screen-shot-2011-06-25-at-1-05-02-am\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12692\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Marriage Equality States\" src=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/screen-shot-2011-06-25-at-1-05-02-am.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"343\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The energy around this has been building in the last few months, culminating in this evening&#8217;s historic achievement in civil and human rights history.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In recent months \u00a0dozens of New Yorkers &#8211; everyday people and celebrities alike &#8211; recorded video testimonials in support of marriage equality in New York.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color:#444444;font-family:Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif;line-height:23px;font-size:14px;\">[youtube=http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=ofDLFnH4WTY#at=13]<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In April the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/irene-monroe\/marriage-equality-film-co_b_857820.html\" target=\"_blank\">Huffington Post<\/a>\u00a0covered Harlem Stage&#8217;s premiere of the new documentary short film, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/marriageequalityfilm.com\/\" target=\"_hplink\">Marriage Equality: Byron Rushing and the Fight for Fairness<\/a>, directed by\u00a0New York native and award-winning African American gay filmmaker Thomas Allen Harris, and sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>On June 24th President Obama said\u00a0\u201cI believe that gay couples deserve the same legal rights as every other couple in this country.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>This evening NY Governor Cuomo said that we<a href=\"http:\/\/cnn.com\/video\/?\/video\/bestoftv\/2011\/06\/24\/exp.ac.cuomo.marriage.beacon.cnn\"> &#8220;reached a new level of social justice this evening,\u201d<\/a> making him \u201cespecially proud to be a New Yorker&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>And later, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg called the vote a &#8220;historic triumph for equality and freedom.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left:90px;\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color:#444444;font-family:Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif;line-height:23px;font-size:14px;\">&#8220;In recent weeks, I have had many conversations with our state Senators. I emphasized that not only is marriage equality consistent with bedrock American principles, but it is also consistent with bedrock Republican Party principles of liberty and freedom &#8212; and the Republicans who stood up today for those principles will long be remembered for their courage, foresight, and wisdom.
