{"id":14985,"date":"2011-11-13T12:54:59","date_gmt":"2011-11-13T17:54:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/?p=14985"},"modified":"2011-11-13T12:54:59","modified_gmt":"2011-11-13T17:54:59","slug":"is-harlem-nun-the-real-sister-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/?p=14985","title":{"rendered":"Is Harlem Nun the &#8220;Real&#8221; Sister Act????"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/sister-act-300x180.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14988\" title=\"sister-act-300x180\" src=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/sister-act-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Almost 20 years after the hit movie &#8220;Sister Act&#8221; debuted, a former Roman Catholic nun and honorary &#8220;Queen Mother&#8221; of Harlem is suing Walt Disney Co. and Sony Films claiming her life was the inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>Queen Mother Dr. Delois Blakely, was a \u201cyoung, Black, singing nun serving the street people and youths of Harlem,\u201d when she published an autobiography, &#8220;The Harlem Street Nun&#8221; in 1987.\u00a0 Later that year, she sent a 3 page synopsis of her story to Tri Star Pictures.<\/p>\n<p>According to the claims, producer Scott Rudin took a Sister Act project from Tri-Star to Disney and went on to executive produce a film that made more than $230 million at the box office, as well as producing a sequel and a Tony-nominated Broadway musical.\u00a0 The lead character, as played by Whoopi Goldberg in the film, is named, interestingly enough, DELORES van Cartier. The studios declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>Queen Mother Blakely was profiled in the NY Times in 2003.
