The evening will also include a theatrical reading of Walcott\u2019s landmark play,\u00a0<em><strong>Dream on Monkey Mountain<\/strong><\/em>, by the\u00a0<strong>Classical Theatre of Harlem<\/strong>with\u00a0<strong>Andr\u00e9 de Shields<\/strong>\u00a0reprising his role as<em>Makak<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>An accomplished writer, playwright, and scholar,\u00a0<strong>Derek Walcott<\/strong>\u00a0has published ten revered books of poetry, including\u00a0<em>The Antilles: Fragments of Epic Memory<\/em>, his Nobel lecture which was published in 1992.<\/p>\n<p>Walcott has been honored with a plethora of international prizes, including the\u00a0<strong>Queen\u2019s Medal for Poetry<\/strong>. He was a recipient of a five-year fellowship from the MacArthur Foundation and is an Honorary Member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. His poetry books include\u00a0<em>Another Life<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Star Apple Kingdom<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Fortunate Traveller<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Bounty and Collected Poems 1948-1984<\/em>, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Poetry. In addition to his poetry, he is the founder of the\u00a0<strong>Trinidad Theater Workshop<\/strong>. His plays\u2014which include\u00a0<em>Dream on Monkey Mountain<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Remembrance and Pantomime,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Odyssey<\/em>\u2014have been produced internationally, including the New York Shakespeare Festival. Walcott is based out of New York City and Castries, St. Lucia.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Speakers &amp; Performances:<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.elmuseo.org\/en\/event\/symposium-caribbean-crossroads-keynote-address-nobel-laureate-derek-walcott\" target=\"_blank\">Symposium events<\/a>\u00a0will take place at both\u00a0<strong>El Museo del Barrio<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>The Studio Museum in Harlem<\/strong>. Panel presentations will explore topics drawing from art history, literature, and the political and social history of the Caribbean and its diaspora. Panel speakers include:\u00a0<strong>Dr. Rich Blint, Marc Latamie, Dr. Erica Moiah James, Richard Rawlins, Dr. Lowery Stokes Sims, Claire Tancons, Dr. Krista Thompson and Frances Negr\u00f3n-Muntaner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition, the\u00a0<strong>New International Center of Diverse Artists (NICODA)<\/strong>\u00a0will present\u00a0<strong>How We Are Connected<\/strong>, a theatrical response to National Geographic\u2019s The Genographic Project.
