The 23rd<\/sup> edition of the New York African Film Festival kicks off at Film Society of Lincoln Center (FSLC) on Wednesday, May 4<\/span><\/span>\u00a0with a preview town hall meeting on Sunday, May 1<\/span><\/span>. The festival runs at Film Society through May 10<\/span><\/span> before heading to other venues around town.<\/p>\n

Digital Diaspora Family Reunion Roadshow is a powerful program that helps bridge perceived differences between people and transforms strangers into family.<\/p>\n

People of all backgrounds are invited to bring family photos (on phones, Ipads or traditional prints) to the event for a chance to be one of the selected individuals asked to share their family stories, and in the process discover the links that underlie our common humanity as their photos are projected on a large screen for the audience. Those who want to come and simply watch the event as audience members are welcome too.<\/p>\n

A special\u00a0<\/span>Art & Activism: Personal Journeys<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0<\/i><\/span>panel discussion with creatives from the African Diaspora including Thomas Allen Harris, photographer Delphine Fawundu,\u00a0<\/strong>musician\u00a0Ayoinmotion<\/strong>\u00a0and actress-educator Malika Lee Whitney<\/strong> will follow the interactive family reunion.<\/p>\n

Presented under the theme Modern Days, Ancient Nights: 50 Years of African Film Filmmaking<\/i> \u2013marking the 50th anniversary of the 1966 Cannes Film Festival debut of Ousmane Sembene\u2019s Black Girl (La Noire de\u2026)<\/i>\u2014 the 2016 New York African Film Festival will present film screenings, artist Q&As, a digital art exhibit, and other ancillary programs. NYAFF is a month- long, multi-venue event taking place at Film Society of Lincoln Center (May 1 and 4\u201410, 2016); Maysles Cinema \u00a0(May 13\u2013 15, 2016); and Brooklyn Academy of Music\u2019s BAMcinematek\u00a0(May 26 \u2013\u00a030, 2016).<\/p>\n
