Once again, New Yorkers have the opportunity to go to the
\npolls on Tuesday, June 28, 2016. This time it is to narrow the candidate pool\u00a0of Senate and Congressional candidates for the general election. New York State\u00a0has a CLOSED primary, which means that Democrats vote for Democrats, and\u00a0Republicans vote for Republicans. Independents are not eligible to vote in this
\nprimary\u2014similar to the last presidential primary.<\/p>\n

\n

There is a growing trend in political awareness these days
\nthat emphasizes the importance of Local Elections. Picking the right candidates\u00a0for the Senate and Congress at the Federal level, and for State Assembly and\u00a0Senate at the State level is extremely important. We encourage you to focus on\u00a0these local races just as much as you follow the presidential election.<\/p>\n

\u00a0As mentioned in a previous post about this year\u2019s elections,
\nHCL is focusing on the 3 Congressional Districts that affect Harlem. These are\u00a0districts 10, 13, and 15. To find out which district is yours, go to House.gov<\/a> and enter your zip code.\u00a0 <\/span>Some zip codes are covered by more than\u00a0one representative. In this case, you will need to enter your street address to\u00a0find out which representative is yours. As you will see, for the US Senate race\u00a0for New York, there is only one candidate from each party. So your focus would
\nbe on the Congressional race to narrow down the pool.<\/p>\n

The incumbent, [D]-Chuck Schumer<\/a>, is up for\u00a0re-election. Co-incumbent, [D]-Kristen Gillibrand<\/a>\u2019s term\u00a0ends in 2019. In the General Election (in November), Schumer will be in\u00a0competition with Republican candidate Wendy Long<\/a>. There is also a Third
\nParty candidate, Robin\u00a0Laverne Wilson<\/a>.<\/p>\n
