The seven-block-long tunnel, running from 33rd Street to 40th Street, which originally carried rail cars when it opened in 1834, will become the basis for a temporary, participatory art installation.\u00a0 See more <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/dot\/summerstreets\/html\/route\/art-performance.shtml\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Here<\/span><\/a><\/span>. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Cool Stop<\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0is a prototype for a water mister that connects to fire hydrants and provides a safe, efficient and fun alternative to cool off by a hydrant. Constructed mostly of recycled PVC piping, the 10&#8242; installation resembles a large splash that Summer Streets participants may stand under for a small reprieve from the hot summer sun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/2013\/07\/03\/summer-streets-returns-to-nyc-this-august\/top5_art\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23268\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23268\" alt=\"top5_art\" src=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/top5_art.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/top5_art.jpg 350w, http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/top5_art-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/top5_art-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Summer Streets is modeled on other events from around the world including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.streetfilms.org\/ciclovia\/\">Ciclov\u00eda<\/a>\u00a0in Bogot\u00e1, Colombia and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pps.org\/great_public_spaces\/one?public_place_id=997\">Paris Plage<\/a>. The event is part bike tour, part walking tour, part block party&#8211;a great time for exercise, people watching, or just enjoying summer mornings.<\/p>\n<p>Running from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm, Summer Streets extends from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park. \u00a0All activities at Summer Streets are free of charge, and designed for people of all ages and ability levels to share the streets respectfully. On three consecutive Saturdays in the summer, nearly seven miles of NYC\u2019s streets are opened for people to play, walk, bike, and breathe. Summer Streets provides space for healthy recreation and encourages New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation.
