{"id":23865,"date":"2013-07-29T20:40:20","date_gmt":"2013-07-30T00:40:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/?p=23865"},"modified":"2013-07-30T20:51:30","modified_gmt":"2013-07-31T00:51:30","slug":"harlem-kicks-off-harlemweek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/?p=23865","title":{"rendered":"A great start to HarlemWeek"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Screen-shot-2013-07-30-at-6.35.21-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23886\" alt=\"HarlemWeek via HarlemCondoLife @HarlemHCL\" src=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Screen-shot-2013-07-30-at-6.35.21-PM.png\" width=\"211\" height=\"154\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I attended the kick off of HarlemWeek on Sunday at\u00a0U.S. Grant National Park on West 122nd Street and Riverside Drive (the Western edge of Harlem).\u00a0 It was great!<\/p>\n<p>I arrived at 3pm just in time for an hour and a half of uplifting gospel performances.<\/p>\n<p>The crowd was then treated to an incredible fashion show. The centerpiece of which were amazing hats. \u00a0A planned medley of Steve Wonder tunes was cancelled by persistent and increasingly heavy rain. \u00a0 A scheduled appearance by Stevie Wonder was canceled, though he called in to inspire the crowd, and told us that he had been inspired by us too. There was a verbal tribute to him, during which we were reminded of his role as a great artist and civil rights figure prominent in bringing about Martin Luther King day.<\/p>\n<p>It was the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, a feeling that permeated the day and its festivities.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pM3HS3rr-w0\" height=\"375\" width=\"500\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>There was a reading of Martin Luther King&#8217;s &#8220;I\u00a0Have a Dream&#8221;, the words of which remain as moving and relevent today a they ever were.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/smEqnnklfYs\" height=\"375\" width=\"500\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I was able to catch up with <a href=\"http:\/\/vincemorgan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vince Morgan<\/a> with whom I first met recently at my local favorite <a href=\"http:\/\/hfbnyc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">HarlemFoodBar<\/a>. \u00a0We chatted about politics, music, and the need for grass roots representation now more than ever.<\/p>\n<p>And I also got a chance to meet Elliot Spitzer. I told him I really loved what he had to say on Bill Maher this past Friday:\u00a0<a title=\"July 26, 2013 Clip: Race Issues\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hbo.com\/video\/video.html\/?autoplay=true&amp;vid=1332153&amp;filter=real-time-with-bill-maher&amp;view=null\">July 26, 2013 Clip: Race Issues<\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"overflow: hidden;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hbo.com\/data\/content\/global\/videos\/embed\/data\/1332153.html?height=315&amp;width=500\" height=\"315\" width=\"500\" seamless=\"seamless\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div>The food was great, the crowd was fun, the police respectful. It was a great way to spend a day and kickoff a workweek.
