{"id":25234,"date":"2013-10-20T07:00:03","date_gmt":"2013-10-20T11:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/?p=25234"},"modified":"2014-12-11T10:09:55","modified_gmt":"2014-12-11T15:09:55","slug":"sunday-jazz-corner-lalah-hathaway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/?p=25234","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Jazz Corner with Lalah Hathaway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/2013\/10\/20\/sunday-jazz-corner-lalah-hathaway\/lalah-hathaway-at-variety-playhouse\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25244\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-25244\" src=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/lalahhathaway_100511_0611.jpg\" alt=\"Lalah Hathaway at Variety Playhouse\" width=\"446\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The apple does not fall far from the tree. \u00a0A few weeks ago we featured the legendary Donny Hathaway on our <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/category\/000-type-of-post\/sunday-jazz-corner\/#.UmNOKr-Kzww\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Sunday Jazz Corner<\/span><\/a><\/span> and in it we briefly mentioned his daughter Lalah. \u00a0This week it is all about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LalahHathaway\" target=\"_blank\">Lalah Hathaway<\/a>, daughter of the jazz and R&amp;B great Donny Hathaway. \u00a0Though she may be under the radar to some, if you do not already know about Lalah, you will know about her soon as she continues to rise at a rapid pace amongst her peers.<\/p>\n<p>Born as <em>Eulaulah Donyll Hathaway,<\/em>\u00a0Lalah Hathaway is referred to as the First Daughter of Soul. \u00a0She is considered a contemporary R&amp;B and jazz singer. \u00a0In a sea of high pitched soprano female pop culture singers, it is so refreshing to hear Lalah Hathaway in the mix. \u00a0There is something about her texture and tone in the same context as Sade or Sarah Vaughan and other infectious swooners that just makes you feel good inside. \u00a0When you think of pop culture singers these days, you emmediatialy think Beyonce, Rihanna, pop, Hip Hop, soul etc. \u00a0But with the Esmaralda Spalding&#8217;s and Janelle Monae&#8217;s and other newbies quietly making themselves heard, please take note of Lalah Hathaway and check out her music on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/album\/something-lalah-hathaway-single\/id692865822\" target=\"_blank\">iTunes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first video you will listen to below is \u00a0&#8220;Something&#8221; by Snarky Puppy featuring Lalah Hathaway. \u00a0I was referred to it by a friend and watched blindly, and unprepared. \u00a0I started off listening, watching calmly, inquisitively, maybe slightly judgmental, sitting in my chair&#8230; watching, waiting&#8230; and as it continued I started getting this feeling, this emotion inside of me. \u00a0I sat up straight in my chair and tuned everything else out around me. \u00a0Now, in one hundred percent concentration mode listening and watching this video in front of me, completely committed with Lalah and her performance I begin talking to my computer screen&#8230; next, I am standing, now I&#8217;m yelling at my computer, clapping, cheering!! \u00a0Alone in my apartment, goose bumps running all through my body up and down my spine I sit back down. \u00a0Of course because I&#8217;m a man, I did not cry. \u00a0Maybe just one tiny tear but I fixed that real quick and like I said, I was alone and nobody was there to see a thing.<\/p>\n<p>I think jazz, gospel, good soul, rock whatever, is supposed to make you, make us feel this way, right? \u00a0Sometimes rarely, music can\u00a0take you there to this place and so when you do feel it and are a part of the art and why music exists in the first place, it is such a great experience. \u00a0So ya, that&#8217;s kind of what my experience with Lalah was like. \u00a0And just remember, nobody cried here!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/2013\/10\/20\/sunday-jazz-corner-lalah-hathaway\/images-18\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25243\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25243\" src=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/images111.jpeg\" alt=\"images\" width=\"252\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are two videos below one Live in Harlem with Robert Glasper at Marcus Garvey Park, and \u00a0the first one is by Snarky Puppy &#8220;Something&#8221; featuring a live recording of Lalah Hathaway. \u00a0I could have posted 20 more like this but I kept it down to two. \u00a0While writing this piece and listening to this music all I could think of was all of the music that we still can look forward to with future recordings of Lalah Hathaway.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0SJIgTLe0hc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>P.S.
