The pamphlet seemed to offer the impossible: the prospect of a full scholarship to several of her dream colleges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); padding-left: 30px;\" data-para-count=\"284\" data-total-count=\"532\">She went running out to her father, a house painter, who was sitting on the family\u2019s porch in Grass Valley, a California city in the Sierra Nevada foothills. \u201cYou have to see this,\u201d she told him. \u201cThis is the scholarship that will get me to the best schools in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); padding-left: 30px;\" data-para-count=\"421\" data-total-count=\"953\">The pamphlet was from a nonprofit organization called\u00a0<a style=\"color: #326891;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.questbridge.org\/\">QuestBridge<\/a>, which has quietly become one of the biggest players in elite-college admissions. Almost 300 undergraduates at Stanford this year, or 4 percent of the student body, came through QuestBridge. The share at Amherst is 11 percent, and it\u2019s 9 percent at Pomona.
