Freeman who founded the first such center, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpfreemanpni.org\/patient-navigation\/\" target=\"_blank\">Patient Navigator Institute<\/a> in Harlem New York City in 1990.  The underlying concept is to eliminate barriers to timely cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment and supportive care.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-7799\" href=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/2010\/08\/25\/what-did-pro-cyclist-lance-armstrong-learn-in-harlem\/patient-nav\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7799\" title=\"The Institute\" src=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/patient-nav.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"58\" srcset=\"http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/patient-nav.gif 655w, http:\/\/harlemcondolife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/patient-nav-300x35.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Freeman is former chairman of <a href=\"http:\/\/deainfo.nci.nih.gov\/advisory\/pcp\/pcp.htm\" target=\"_blank\">President Obama&#8217;s Cancer Panel.<\/a> The panel is responsible for assessing the National Cancer Program. Lance also served two three-year terms on the panel. Says Mr. Freeman:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\">\u201cHe came to see me at our center, which takes care of poor black and Hispanic people, many of whom have no health insurance,\u201d Dr. Freeman said. \u201cHe showed a genuine interest in what I was trying to do and came back four different times.
