Barawine photoshopped

I finally had a chance to dine at Barawine in Harlem one chilly quiet weekday evening.  I had an incredible experience.

Barawine is located in the space formerly occupied by Harlem’s first and short-lived caviar bar.   The venue is beautifully laid out and visually stunning.  I loved what felt like three different spaces each with unique feel and charm.  The display of wine bottles is particularly beautiful.  We were greeted by friendly attentive staff, all of whom spoke French.  The owner greeted us warmly and identified recommended dishes all of which I tried.  My dishes pictured below were warm and savory, the portions filling, and the prices right.

The wine selected by the owner was terrific.  The Spicy Corn and Poblano Cheese Soup was silky smooth and just spicy enough.  Every bite of the The Branzino Provencal was as flavorful and as unique as the last – truly delicious.

What I particularly like about this corner of Harlem, this particular Harlem restaurant row as it were, is that there is a decidedly french feel to it with newcomer Cheri up the block and across the street (stay tuned for our review of Cheri) and Chez Lucienne adjacent to Red Rooster up the block on the same side of the Street where Barawine is located.  I love the French influence in Harlem, being of French-Canadian and Haitian descent.

Things seem to be coming along for the opening of Barawine neighborhood restaurant on the bright sunny corner of Lenox Ave Malcolm X Boulevard and 120th Street.  After leaving the opening of Harlem Shake the other day, we walked 4 blocks down on Lenox to check on the progress of Barawine.  Nicely situated on the north east corner of the avenue next to the charming Settepani restaurant.   This will add to this section of Lenox Avenue where further up there are a cluster of restaurants Sylvia’s, Les Ambassades, Corner Social, Red Rooster, Cove Lounge, Chez Lucienne and the new Harlem Shake.

The signage which use to read coming soon Winter 2013 now says Spring 2013.  I predict soon it will read Summer 2013 as they appear to be a few weeks away from their opening day.  Word on the street (and from one of the workman who will remain nameless) said they were waiting on their liquer license and clearance for outdoor seating.  We are hopeful for this new addition to the neighborhood in Harlem.  Stay tuned for further information and their official opening date.
