Extreme heat can be dangerous, according to the New York City Department of Health. High temperatures and humidity can cause heat-related illnesses including heat stroke, an often fatal condition. Older adults have the highest rates of illness and death from extreme heat exposure, but people of all ages are at risk, especially those with underlying health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and breathing condition such as emphysema; and those taking diuretics, or medications for psychiatric illness such as schizophrenia or dementia.
Heat victims are often overcome by heat in their own homes so please check on family, friends and neighbors who live alone, especially if they do not have working air conditioners.
