Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka “Officially” Move to New York: Welcome to Harlem!

More and more celebrities continue to flock to Harlem New York. Neil Patrick Harris Harlem days aren’t over—in fact, they’re just about to begin! Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka who recently purchased property in Harlem in 2013, “Officially” move to New York.

The Burtka-Harris family is trading sunny California for Harlem, NY. Neil told Us Weekly last year “Our plan is to reroute ourselves and have our kids start to go to school here. Neil is also starring in Broadway’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

I hope that many of the new hot and hoppin restaurants located on Harlem’s Restaurant Row, Vinateria, Harlem Food Bar, The Cecil, Maison Harlem, Cedric Bistro, The 5 and Diamond, Melbas, Jado Sushi, The Park 112, and all the many other great spots throughout New York, will extend child friendly accommodations. Two places in particular that are very kid friendly in Harlem are Bier International on FDB and Harlem Shake NYC on Lenox Avenue.

Diversity and the Oscars

Lee & Low is a children’s book publisher focussed on bringing diverse voices to the forefront and promoting related conversations.

They produced this info graphic of the Academy’s track record on honoring the work of minorities. The backdrop to this includes an investigation by The Los Angeles Times in 2012. The Times found that the majority of Academy members are older white men, and of the 85 best actress awards, just one went to a person of color, Halle Berry in 2002.

The Academy’s new president is Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the first African-American to do so. She and its chief executive Dawn Hudson are taking steps to increase diversity, which includes a diverse roster of faces for the March 2 show.

Sunday Jazz Corner with Sammy Davis Jr.

Jazz great and entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. was the coolest cat in the Rat Pack. He was known as someone who could do it all – sing, dance, play instruments, act, do stand-up and for his self-deprecating humor. But Sammy Davis first and foremost was a performer and entertainer until the day he died. Looking through old video footage you can see him come alive the second he hits that stage connecting with his audience.

After reuniting with Sinatra and Dean Martin in 1987, Davis toured with them and Liza Minnelli internationally, before he died of throat cancer in 1990. He died in debt to the Internal Revenue Service, and his estate was the subject of legal battles. It is hard to imagine that such a musical great once billed as the “greatest living entertainer in the world”, story ended the way that it did. His music will live on with us forever and he will be remembered always as an important part of our history.
