Bier International

Last week NY1 showed an entire segment on the renewed energy on Frederick Douglasss Boulevard between 110th and 124th streets.   Businesses and residents working together to make the strip a destination for all of the neighborhoods shopping needs.  They quote “What you’re now seeing is Frederick Douglass Boulevard is really becoming  sort of the Gateway to Harlem“.  A phrase we developed here at HarlemCondoLife “Your Gateway To Harlem” when we created our site.   They go on to mention some of the businesses on the Boulevard including Bier International, Harlem Flo, Harlem Vintage, MCMB Cleaners, The 5 and Diamond Restaurant, Nectar, Lido Restaurant and Bar all of which we have mentioned and reviewed here at HCL.  They also include short interview clips with owners Jai Jai Greenfield of Harlem Vintage, Louis Gagliano of Harlem Flo, Marcelo Orbe of MCMB Cleaners and Selene Martinez of 5 and Diamond.  Here is a link to the video clip    NY1 video clip.

This area continues to stay in the news and get more recognition.  Congratulations to the businesses mentioned in this report and to all of the businesses on FDB and the surrounding area.

You do not want to miss this special event at Nectar Wine Bar Saturday October 22nd.  Join the Nectar team as they turn over the kitchen to Chef Joseph “JJ” Johnson.  Experience why he won Rocco’s Dinner Party with his flair at turning the ordinary into extraordinary.  Guests will be delighted with four pairs of food & wine from Napa’s handcrafted Joseph Carr Winery.  Chef Joseph “JJ” Johnson & Joseph Carr will engage guests with their insights on this autumnal menu of culinary delights.

There is another place in Harlem to sit outside and enjoy the wonderful summer weather-and sip some delicious wine to go along with it. Nectar, located at 2235 Frederick Douglass Blvd, installed their sidewalk seating yesterday,June 4. As you can see from the photos below, folks wasted no time in sitting down and drinking their white under the Harlem sky. Nice!

I can’t wait to go to Nectar, have some white wine and cheese, and people watch all afternoon long! I love summer and Harlem!

Two weeks ago, I blogged about the top-selling wines at The Winery. When I wrote that post I was asked “where else can one purchase wine in Harlem?”  The response I quickly gave was Harlem Vintage or stop by for a drink at Nectar on Frederick Douglas Blvd and 120th Street. Soon after, I went through some of my old notes and emails, and I came across another option for Harlemites to purchase wine. Wha…la! And this option is linked to Harlem like the others.

May I introduce Sugarleaf Vineyards and Winery. Sugarleaf Vineyards is 100 percent wholly owned by The Bias’, who reside right here in Harlem with their two kids. They often commute back and forth to Virginia to manage their vineyard. However, their home base is a lovely brownstone in Central Harlem.

While the ingredients, barreling and bottling for Sugarleaf wines may take place in Virginia, they hold similar accolades as fellow Harlemite Marcus Samuelsson when it comes to White House honors and the Bravo TV Channel. Their 2008 Petit Manseng was served at The White House for the 2010 Governor’s Ball and their winery was featured in a recent episode of The Real Housewives of DC.

So if your interested in purchasing wines made by Sugarleaf, click here to order. They ship to New York City in increments of 3, 6, and 12 bottles. Or stick to the walk in plan, Sugarleaf is also sold at Harlem Vintage, Nectar and Red Rooster! Cheers!

“Did it up” in Harlem.  The restaurant and nightlife scene was PACKED last Friday night in Harlem.

I started at MOJO’S for dinner and drinks with friends.  It was very crowded and I had the pleasure of meeting the legendary Kiki Shepard, longtime  co-host of “It’s Showtime at the Apollo”  who was sitting at the table next to me.  I talked with owner, Moon, for a long time as well.  Did you know that he sells his own brand of wine?  Pick one up if you’re a red wine lover.  Its very good.  Also learned that they have live music on Monday nights and this Spring/Summer they will open the windows in the front with outdoor tables and in addition will have DJ’s some of the nights.

After dinner headed to NECTAR to say hello to one of the owner’s Eric.  Also very full.  Then walked by SEVENTEEN B but didn’t go in.  Nice crowd but swung by QUESTAN’S instead to say hello to Dee, the owner.   She has to charge a cover now it gets so crowded (almost too crowded) on Friday & Saturday nights.  The music was pumpin’ and it was so packed you could barely move.  Might need a bigger space soon.  She has a very loyal local neighborhood crowd.  Sunday nights at Questan’s DJ’s play House Music now.  HipHop all other nights.

After that we all headed over to 67 ORANGE to say hello to Karl, the owner.  There we closed out the night with wings and 2 orders of pepper popcorn while listening to a diverse mix of all different kinds of music.

So go and support our local businesses next time you want to have a fun night out.  There are many many other good night spots as well… but this was only one night. Next time!

HarlemHouse will be out of town for a month traveling for work but will resume blogging again in April.  In the meantime, enjoy a new Podcast/Mix “SpanishHarlemMix” by RhythmDB.

What can I say about Nectar Wine Bar.  This new hot spot created by owners Eric Woods & Jai Jai Greenfield has created a gathering for those of us uptown, and everywhere, that have been craving a good wine bar.  It has been crowded since it opened April 2008 offering a wide range of wines from their sister shop Harlem Vintage located next door.  They provide a minimal menu of cheeses, meats & hummus to accent their wines.  This is a very nice touch without distracting from this Bar’s main purpose, which of course is the wine.  This place is great for relaxing after work to chillout music as well as keeping you entertained on Saturday nights with House music until closing.  When I asked why did you decide on the location of Frederick Douglass Boulevard, Eric who has been a resident of Harlem for 11 years, said “Frederick Douglass Boulevard is going to be the new area for restaurants, bars, & nightlife and we wanted to provide a place for the people in the neighborhood to enjoy themselves.” They truly have succeeded in their goal with Nectar and its friendly staff, diverse wines, great crowd, and an overall welcoming vibe that has made it a favorite destination in the neighborhood.

For the last couple of years (let’s say three, which isn’t that long), there have been a number of new cafes, restaurants, and bars that have opened up along Frederick Douglass Blvd between 111th and 119th Street. If our memory serves correctly, first it was Society Cafe Lounge. Soon followed Melba’s. After that we believe it was Zoma, Tribal Spears Gallery and Cafe, Nectar Wine Bar and Cafe 2112. Recently, 67 Orange opened, which we hear their Grand Opening is December 5. And now, Svntn Below, which according to Uptown Flavor is open for business!

We like that all these new places have opened up and are very excited that our community continues to grow in the dining/bar/lounges sector!

To answer the question posed, with about eight new places in less than three years opening HarlemCondoLife predicts FDB is on track to become the restaurant row of Harlem!

If we left out a new business, please tell us!
