As you may or may not know the Harlem EatUp! Festival was last weekend’s invitation to try one of the many Harlem restaurants.  Dinners were sponsored by many organizations and often in conjunction with guest chefs from around the country.  The event was organized by Marcus Samuelsson of Red Rooster fame and the first annual Harlem EatUp! Festival took place May 14-17.

As I’ve previously written, I’ll be writing more about the event and my reflections thereon in the following weeks.  However the first thing I need to mention is my Friday night experience at The Five and Diamond.

Now five years old, The 5 and Diamond serves New American food in Lower Harlem.   It is located at2072 Frederick Douglass Boulevard.  Some people call the area South Harlem (SOHA).  HarlemCondoLife.com coined the strip on which is is located HarlemRestaurantRow (there are now many distinct Restaurant Rows in Harlem).   The May 15 evening features Chef Joseph Hayes III and Guest Chef Marvin Woods.  6pm and 8:30pm seatings were available for $85.

I arrived for the second seating.  The place was packed and buzzing. I was greeted warmly by owners who were kind enough to seat me at their table.   I was immediately offered a glass of satisfying red wine and then the food started flowing.   The featured chefs Joseph Hayes III and Guest Chef Marvin Woods did an amazing job.  Sadly I missed out on the Citrus Salad but I really enjoyed the Duck Duck Dua, the Caribbean Seafood Sancocho, the Mahogany Lacquered Rack of Lamb, and the Fig & Tart Cherry Bread Pudding.  Each course was better than the last,.  And as I am a sucker for duck, lamb and bread pudding, all my favorites were covered, and covered well.

Entertainment was provided on an ongoing basis by Kersten Stevens and Gail Blanche-Gill.  Local musicians and their band who serenaded us with uplifting sounds throughout the eventing.

All in all it was a magical experience.

We have always been big fans of The Five and Diamond.  They are pioneers, survivors and innovators,  in so many senses of these words.

We wish them nothing but continued success and all the best.

President Bill Clinton kicks-off #HarlemEatUP festival, which is now well in progress, with a great opening speech.

A little bit of rain came through but it has passed and we are ready to eat some good food and try some great wine in this packed crowd!

Good to see Bill Clinton back in Harlem where he use to have an office on 125th street for many years.

Enjoy the festival!

Brunch'n'Harlem Brunch In Harlem HarlemCondoLife

Saturday and Sunday Brunch in Harlem is serious business – an event that is not to be missed.

It’s all about legendary, newly established and up and coming restaurants, often at full capacity, serving a wide variety of great food, to well-dressed locals and visitors from the world over, in one of The City’s hottest neighborhoods.

Stay tuned as we identify several of our favorite places below, which include the Five and Diamond, Red Rooster, Melbas, Harlem Food Bar, The Cecil, Chocolat, Sylvia’s, Lido, Maison, Kitchenette and Vinateria – to name just a few.

A word to the wise.  Harlem’s Restaurant Rows are easy to stroll.  However be warned:  Be hungry.  Have a place in mind.  Pick a backup. Get there early.  Don’t always expect to be seated right away it may take a few minutes.  Don’t rule out making a reservation  which you can do via Opentable, etc.   Basically, apply the same rules you would apply elsewhere in NYC.  But whatever you do, do check out Brunch in Harlem!

For the latest news on restaurants in Harlem, follow us on twitter @HarlemHCL.  Also check-out our extensive list of restaurants on Harlem Restaurant Row Reviews for our latest thoughts on all the great food and drink Harlem has to offer.

Art In FLUX Harlem and Aloft Hotel launch a collaboration to promote visual artists in Harlem.  On the evening of December 3, 2013 Art In FLUX presents two Harlem artists, Andre Woolery and Ruben Natal-San Miguel, in the lobby of Aloft on their dedicated art walls.  Aloft has a company-wide commitment to support the local artistic community by devoting space to presenting art.  Art In FLUX hopes to utilize the Aloft Harlem space to present unique and compelling exhibits that create conversation and highlight the dynamic contemporary art culture in Harlem.

This inaugural exhibit at Aloft is titled NOTHING IS COLORPROOF after a piece by Andre Woolery of the same name.  “Nothing is Colorproof” is a triptych of a gun shooting a swirling rainbow of colors.   “A gun represents both chaos and order. In the chaos of my thoughts and ideas, color is the organizing order. It brings clarity to a vision. If my mind were the weapon and my ideas were the bullets… then color would be the force propelling it forward” states Andre.

unnamed-1

Both Andre and Ruben reflect on culture, race, and gender through their own mediums – paint & pushpins and photography, respectively.  They each capture moments in time and exploit the use of color and light to convey a sense of hope.  Ruben chronicles Harlem by photographing the people and the architecture that are the fabric of the community.  Andre paints iconic images hoping to open our eyes to a new set of possibilities.    Together these two artists open a window on our society and awaken our consciousness.

NOTHING IS COLORPROOF opens on December 3rd at 6:30pm.
