Reflections of an Upcoming Sandwich Place

HarlemCondoLife

By HarlemGal

Word on the Harlem street, between 112th and 113th on FDB, is that this is going to be a sandwich place. Yummy.  With the hanging of purple drapes, I assumed wine bar.  Maybe its sandwiches and wine? Tell us if you know.  Either way HarlemCondoLife looks forward to another new biz, whose product is potentially food, to the neighborhood!

Now is the time to buy in Harlem

As I started my Sunday routines it occurred to me that now is a great time to buy in Harlem – as many past, present and future posts in this blog will attest.

  • Prices have remained firm.
  • Businesses continue to invest in the neighborhood.
  • A steady influx of people continue to arrive and yet it is never packed.
  • There are plenty of parks, cultural institutions, entertainment options, and restaurants.
  • Harlem is featured regularly in the press as reported in HarlemCondoLife: NYT, Voice, etc.
  • The seesaws in the stock market indicate it is looking for and finding a bottom.
  • Experts like Warren Buffett are saying so and buying.
  • Banks are lending to each other again.
  • A momentous election is on the horizon and elections are generally good for the economy.
  • Wall street banks are expected to pay out bonuses this year – which always helps the market.

Shake the blues – come join us in Harlem!

Saturday In The Park In Harlem

I took a walk the other day along Morningside park in the teens and came across a refurbished playground featuring all the latest in kids recreation, including my favorite – water fountains and sprays.  The park was brimming with parents and kids and it just reminded me again of how great and young and fun this neighborhod is for families of all walks of life.  I took advantage of the moment to record one moment in time for that park – see below.

Morningside Height's Farmers Market

HarlemCondoLife

By HarlemGal

The New York City Coalition Against Hunger recently tipped off HarlemCondoLife about a farmers market serving the community of Harlem. We decided to check it out ourselves. What we discovered…their slogan “the farm comes to you” rings true.  You can see for yourself by heading to 110th Street and Manhattan Avenue. They’re right on the Northwest corner! According to Cara, the manager, the market has been open for more than two years and will be open this year until November 22, 2008.

Atomic Wings coming soon to Harlem

Atomic Wings will be opening a new outlet by year end @ 113th and 8th Avenue across the street from Melbas.

Those of you who have lived or visited the southwestern-most corner of Harlem - known as the corridor to Harlem – will recall a few different business have occupied this space, from a Diner, which I loved to a more upscale African restaurant.

The latest occupant is Atomic Wings.

As of last week the windows were still papered up.  But this week, I noticed a new large orange awning (orange seems to be the colour du jour in this little corner of Harlem, which includes Frederick Douglass Boulevard (aka 8th ave aka CPW above W. 110th) from 110th to 116th streets.

Atomic Wings joins a few other similar recently opened establishments in Harlem.

Stay tuned for more on these and other eateries.
In the meantime, please join us in welcoming them to the neighborhood, sample the fare, and post a comment to let us and our readers know the deal – all on HarlemCondoLife.com.

That's it…West Harlem will never be the same

You know when The New York Times features a story on the front page of the Fashion & Style section, its like letting the “cat out of the bag”  or “spilling the beans ” so to speak…but in a good way.  In this week’s edition, there is a story called “Vital Signs Under the Viaduct” and it highlights all the new businesses that are in the area.

Harlemgal has frequented the area. I’ve chowed down on ribs at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, battled for my groceries at Fairway and sipped on some smooth vino at the Hudson River Cafe – all have been fun and delightful experiences.  Now, on my to-do-list, Talay, which was also recently featured in NY Mag!

Gran Piatto D'Oro

by HarlemHouse

Great Italian Restaurant opened 2 months ago in the hood: Gran Piatto d’Oro.
The atmoshpere is relaxing and inviting, the service is top notch, and most importantly, the food is delicious! It is not as inexpensive as you would hope it to be, which is the only bad thing I can say about it. However, once you experience an evening dining there, you will feel that the price is worth it. I highly recommend their appetizer and entree specials but the standards, Sophia Loren Chicken Dish and Seafood Risotto, are also very tasty. The staff are eager to please and the opera music and sometimes live Pianist make for a very relaxing and comfortable dining experience.

Harriet Tubman Memorial “Swing Low”

As you walk along Frederick Douglass Boulevard, one of the most striking sights is the statue of Harriet Tubman nestled in the triangle at 123rd Street where St. Nicholas Avenue crosses FDB.  This remarkable sculpture is the work of Alison Saar, an African American artist who has captured the strength and determination of the most famous leader of the Underground Railroad while making a powerful statement about this heroic figure’s impact on both the lives she touched and the institution of slavery.  Alison Saar has constructed the standing figure of Harriet Tubman as an “oncoming train”, aimed at the South, with the faces and shoes of her passengers as well as the precious personal items they carried and the broken shackles they wore, embedded in her skirts.  The exposed roots in her wake symbolize both the uprooting of the institution of slavery and the upheaval faced by each individual slave who chose to seek freedom by severing themselves from the only life they had ever known.  The piece is entitled “Swing Low”, named for one of Harriet Tubman’s favorite spirituals.  Check out the artist’s description of her vision at the link below or, better yet, walk by and take a look for yourself.

End of summer visit the the Drummers Circle

IMG_2801

A few weeks’ back I visited Marcus Garvey Park to see and hear the famous Drummers Circle.

It was fantastic.  They took over the former BBQ pit which I had hoped to try one day.  I had a great time watching and listening to the drummers as well as the participants.  There was a bit of a ruckus this past Summer from some local neighbors. You can read about the incredible history and potential future of the Drummers Circle here.

For great video footage please visit HarlemCondoLife’s channel on Youtube.
