Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., New York City’s first African American City Councilman and Harlem’s first Black Congressman, was born on November 29, 1908. This colorful, charismatic and sometimes controversial Harlemite led the boycotts that integrated employment in the previously “whites only” stores on 125th Street in the middle of the last century.  Celebrations of the centennial of his birth are planned throughout the week including screenings of the biographical movie “Keep the Faith, Baby” at the Harlem State Office Building and a Program entitled “Keeping  the Faith in the 21st Century” at the Schomburg Center this Saturday, November 29th from 11 am to 6 pm.  The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is located at 515 Malcolm X Boulevard (aka Lenox Avenue) and 135 Street.
