Signs of Life at Gateway Condo Harlem?

By HarlemGuy

Seen early this morning:

  • a crane
  • a flatbed truck loaded with lumber
  • some men in the construction area busy tidying things up for what looked like a delivery.

Could it be that construction at the gateway condo in Harlem is poised to resume?

UPDATE: Marcus Samuelsson will open up a restaurant in Harlem, Red Rooster is the name

By HarlemGal

I am quickly learning that any move Chef Marcus Samuelsson makes it’s like hot cakes. I saw all the online chatter Wednesday (again) and a post on Twitter about Samuelsson opening up a restaurant in Harlem. As we did with our first post about this topic, we  headed straight to his PR rep directly to ask: is our Harlem neighbor going to be opening up a restaurant where he lives or not? Are Harlemites going to be able to enjoy his culinary expertise uptown, instead of downtown? The answer is ….a big YES! The new restaurant will be named Red Rooster and his goal is to open this place in 2010. The exact location and menu have not been decided yet, per his PR rep.

This is more good news for the restaurant scene in Harlem and a milestone for Samuelsson. Apparently, he has lived in Harlem for six years now and this will be his first restaurant in Harlem.  Thanks to him and several other restaurants in Harlem, we are starting to have more and more options to choose from when it comes to dining out in Harlem. My only hope now is that Samuelsson moves to open his restaurant in a timely manner.  There is that old business recipe “time kills the deal.” You take too much time and …well…a lot of things can happen! Let’s hope for the best and start placing bets on where Samuelsson’s restaurant will land. Any guess?

The fabulous Doyen of Downtown Celebrity Gossip, Michael Musto, was seen enjoying a casual dinner with friends at MOJO Harlem on  Superbowl Sunday (see our review).  Also recently reported mega-celeb Lady GaGa had been there soaking up the sexy vibe the week before. Cool people are finally coming above 14th St. Uptown is truly down.

Harlem's Best Yet Market is starting to look its best

By HarlemGal

HarlemCondoLife

The wait is over! Best Yet Market has opened its doors in Harlem on Frederick Douglass Blvd. between 118th and 119th Street. They opened up officially on February 4th. I went to take a quick look at the place today and from what I saw…the place is very nice! It has two levels so it is spacious. You almost feel like your grocery shopping in the suburbs.

From the looks and feel of the place, I will more than likely enjoy shopping at Best Yet in Harlem. It is not far from the B and the C subway line on 116th Street. The prices did not appear to be that much different from C Town or Central Market. They have a sizable coffee bar that will compete with you know who right next door? And Best Yet will have several cold and hot food bars, which is perfect for us Harlemites who are on the go and want more food options close to home.

If you have checked out Best Yet in Harlem, tell us what you think so far!

Harlem condo receives FHA approval, Park Central taking calls

By HarlemGal

There seems to be  plenty of condo activity happening along our favorite boulevard in Harlem, i.e. Frederick Douglass Blvd!

We received notice, along with every other site, that 2280 FDB, a new residential development in Harlem, has been FHA approved. Yeah!  Good for them.

Then as you walk south, you will see a new condo being built right on the intersection of West 121st Street and St. Nicholas and FDB (triangle intersection). This space is now getting dressed with glass.

And then a few more blocks down, you will see that the netting has come down on the Park Central Condo and a phone number is posted for those that want to inquire.

Those few blocks along FDB from 119th to 123rd are shaping up to be very nice. And of course, those that decide to move to this area of Harlem are expected to have a new cafe close by called Triangle Cafe. Nice!

ABC's Ugly Betty is in Spanish Harlem

By HarlemGal
Ugly Betty is in the barrio, El Museo del Barrio that is, which is located at East 105th Street and Fifth Avenue. Fellow blogger Austin2Harlem tipped us off that the now cancelled TV show is taping one of their last episodes at the Latino cultural institution today! The cast and crew were onsite yesterday as well!

I am so bummed about the cancellation of this show. I am a fan! I really liked watching Betty Suarez, played by America Ferrera, even though the character is from Queens. Glad to know the cast and crew filmed in Spanish Harlem.

There is about eight episodes left to air. See the final season on Wednesday nights on Channel 7!
