harlem park to park

For the second year in a row, top bars from across Harlem and Washington Heights/Inwood to compete for Title of “Best Uptown Bartender”

Mixologists from 30 of New York City’s best uptown bars from Harlem and Washington Heights/Inwood will try to wow bar goers between May 5th and 15th with delectable and original cocktails featuring sponsor spirit brands Hennessy V.S and Hendricks Gin.

uptown-battle-of-the-bars 2

The Uptown Battle of the Bars is presented by Harlem Park to Park, a community improvement association in Central Harlem, and produced by Good Ice Marketing.

Participating bartenders will create signature original cocktails using their choice of ingredients, along with the featured spirits. Cocktails will be available to sample on Monday, May 5 and Monday, May 12th, between 6-10 pm at a special $8 discounted price. Visitors will have the opportunity to vote online from May 5 through the 15th at Instagram @UptownBattle for their favorite cocktail.

The bartenders from the top 12 bars with the highest votes will advance to compete for the title of Best Uptown Bartender at a showdown VIP finale event on May 19, from 6-10 pm, at Harlem Tavern on Frederick Douglas Blvd at 116th Street. At the final showdown, industry and celebrity judges, along with the audience, will taste creations by the mixologists featuring Hennessy V.S and Hendricks Gin.

The Showdown Finale includes 3 rounds of competition. In the first round the bartenders will have 10 minutes to create a cocktail using Hennessy V.S. For the second round, first round finalists will compete to create cocktails using Hendricks Gin. For the last round, the final 2 bartenders, with the assistance of fellow competitors, will use surprise secret ingredients — á la “Chopped” — to create original cocktails, using either of the 2 spirits for the winning title. Drinks will be judged on creativity, taste/complexity, originality and their crowd pleasing factor. Music will be provided by Dj Stormin’ Norman of Sundae Sermon.

“Harlem’s nightlife and bar scene has developed tremendously in the complexity and originality of offerings and concepts. From rum-based craft cocktail bars, to craft brew beer gardens and speakeasies, we are able to offer comparable entertainment options to what one has downtown,” said Harlem Park to Park Executive Director, Nikoa Evans-Hendricks.

“We also have an opportunity to highlight the amazing beverage talent that these establishments are attracting throughout the uptown community,” added Karl Franz Williams, founder and CEO of Good Ice Marketing and owner of mixology bar 67 Orange Street. “Harlem and Washington Heights are not only attracting top restaurants, but both neighborhoods are also attracting and grooming amazing beverage talent. This competition will help generate some visibility for this talented group while providing some exciting entertainment for the neighborhood.”

Tickets to the Showdown finale on May 19, at Harlem Tavern cost $35 in advance and $40 at the door and can be purchased at www.uptownbattleofbars.eventbrite.com. Admission includes discounted drink/appetizer specials and original cocktail samples. Harlem Tavern is located at 2153 Frederick Douglas Boulevard and 116th Street.

Brunch'n'Harlem Brunch In Harlem HarlemCondoLife

Saturday and Sunday Brunch in Harlem is serious business – an event that is not to be missed.

It’s all about legendary, newly established and up and coming restaurants, often at full capacity, serving a wide variety of great food, to well-dressed locals and visitors from the world over, in one of The City’s hottest neighborhoods.

Stay tuned as we identify several of our favorite places below, which include the Five and Diamond, Red Rooster, Melbas, Harlem Food Bar, The Cecil, Chocolat, Sylvia’s, Lido, Maison, Kitchenette and Vinateria – to name just a few.

A word to the wise.  Harlem’s Restaurant Rows are easy to stroll.  However be warned:  Be hungry.  Have a place in mind.  Pick a backup. Get there early.  Don’t always expect to be seated right away it may take a few minutes.  Don’t rule out making a reservation  which you can do via Opentable, etc.   Basically, apply the same rules you would apply elsewhere in NYC.  But whatever you do, do check out Brunch in Harlem!

For the latest news on restaurants in Harlem, follow us on twitter @HarlemHCL.  Also check-out our extensive list of restaurants on Harlem Restaurant Row Reviews for our latest thoughts on all the great food and drink Harlem has to offer.

Thanks again for reading HarlemCondoLife – Your Gateway to Harlem.

With the recent trend of vegan restaurants opening coast to coast from New York to LA, it was only a matter of time before Harlem was next on the list.  Seasoned Vegan Harlem’s first full service vegan restaurant is now opened for business.  Seasoned Vegan is a family business owned by mother and son, Brenda and Aaron Beener specializing in gourmet vegan food.  They give typical Italian, Asian, Middle Eastern, Caribbean and American dishes a vegan, home cooked, soulful twist.

Vegan cooking has become sort of an art form for certain chefs.  If the largely successful “Blossom” located on the Upper West Side is any indication of things to come, we will be seeing more and more vegan restaurants.  When I first dined at Blossom with my sister who has been a vegan for 10  years, I was skeptical.  After trying it I was blown away at how surprisingly flavorful and good it was.

Harlem’s Seasoned Vegan write on their website “The food you love, veganized”.  Great slogan!  I am anxious to try this new place out to see for myself.  For those who may not be aware of what vegan food is, check out this brief write up about it: What is VEGAN.  As I mentioned earlier one of my sisters is a vegan and before that was a vegetarian so I have been privileged to some pretty good homemade meals over the years.  Along with plenty of gentle lecturing on why I should not eat bacon or steak, dairy etc., or any animal products for that matter.  Even though I haven’t changed my ways yet, I understand and admire the vegan way and applaud it.  You do not have to be a vegan to eat and enjoy vegan food.  It is for everyone and I will say that you feel so healthy after having a good vegan dinner.

By the looks of Seasoned Vegans dishes and desserts I imagine they will draw a nice crowd of loyal customers as well as curious new ones.  I am looking forward to visiting them for dinner very soon.  We are so fortunate to have such a diverse and specialized selection of restaurants and businesses here in Harlem.

Welcome to the neighborhood Seasoned Vegan!

More and more celebrities continue to flock to Harlem New York.  Neil Patrick Harris Harlem days aren’t over—in fact, they’re just about to begin!  Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka who recently purchased property in Harlem in 2013, “Officially” move to New York.

The Burtka-Harris family is trading sunny California for Harlem, NY.  Neil told Us Weekly last year “Our plan is to reroute ourselves and have our kids start to go to school here.  Neil is also starring in Broadway’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

I hope that many of the new hot and hoppin restaurants located on Harlem’s Restaurant Row, Vinateria, Harlem Food Bar, The Cecil, Maison Harlem, Cedric Bistro, The 5 and Diamond, Melbas, Jado Sushi, The Park 112, and all the many other great spots throughout New York, will extend child friendly accommodations.  Two places in particular that are very kid friendly in Harlem are Bier International on FDB and Harlem Shake NYC on Lenox Avenue.
