Melba On The Food Network’s Premiere Of “Fat Chef” And Also Appearing On “The View”

Good friend to HarlemCondoLife Melba of Melba’s Restaurant on Frederick Douglass Blvd., will be appearing on Food Network’s premiere episode of “Fat Chef” on Thursday, January 26 at 10pm.  She will also be a guest on The View Thursday, January 26 at 11am.

Congratulations to Melba on all her new recent success.  It could not have happened to a nicer person.

Don’t forget to check out Melba’s Restaurant located at the corner of 114 st. on Frederick Douglass Blvd.  We just had dinner there last week and are in the process of writing a new review for 2012 of Melba’s.

Stay tuned…

New Wine Bar coming soon on Frederick Douglass Blvd.

Looks like a new Wine Bar will be coming to Harlem on Frederick Douglass Boulevard.  Through the grapevine we have been told that the empty retail space between 113th and 114th in the Gateway Towers will soon be home to another Wine Bar.

More news on this as it develops.

And don’t forget two of our other great existing spots on FDB for good wine.. Nectar Wine Bar and 67 Orange.

Bier International (sidewalk seating)

By HarlemHouse                                                                                                                            One of HarlemCondoLife’s favorite spots from day one of the opening is continuing to get more and more popular.  As HarlemGal & HarlemHouse have informed you this is the spot to be!  Now that summer is here, Bier International has their sidewalk certificate to expand all the goodness to those who want to dine and drink outside as well as inside.

Everytime I have guests over from wherever other than Harlem they always ask “whats that place?” pointing to Bier International.  Because It is always crowded and inviting you to check out what it is that you are missing out on.  I always say this is one of the newest most successful spots to open on “Restaurant Row” Frederick Douglass Blvd. here in Harlem.

Stop by  any night and have a beer or appetizer, or a great dinner and judge for yourself.

Hello summer and the ongoing progression of Harlem and all the new opportunities and facilities it is offering to all of us living here.

QUESTAN’S Harlem “Live, love, laugh”

By HarlemHouse

Questan’s, which just opened last summer… is jumpin! Finally dined there last Monday night and had a great time.  There is more going on than meets the eye if you are just walking by the front of the place.  As you come in on your right there is a takeout section. Since they are conveniently opened until 2 and 3am throughout the week this is good to have. See Express menu they have a large Seafood selection for takeout.  Through the main entrance after walking down a short hall you approach tables on the left, a very large full bar on the right and a DJ booth elevated on the back wall.  There is a live DJ every night.  The bar has two flat screen TV’s overhead.  Great if a game is on and you want to watch it muted while listening to tunes and talking with friends.  It was a little chaotic the night I was there which is a good thing for a Monday night.  The weekends must get packed.  We sat at the corner table and had drinks and dinner.  Good drinks and generously poured.  You could easily just go there to chill at the bar with an appetizer or two if all the tables are full.  To begin with we enjoyed the Jalapeno Cornbread.  Then for starters had the Fried Calamari, Lobster & Shrimp Spring Rolls & the Lobster Bisque soup.  All were good but the Lobster & Shrimp Spring Rolls were phenomenal.  Dinner was very good.  Only two of us had entrees the Grilled Shrimp with Spinach & the Broiled Scallops with Homemade French Fries.  Both the Shrimp and Scallops were fresh and delicious and the Homemade French Fries were perfect.  Its a very large menu to choose from especially considering the size of the space. Im heading back again to try something different next week.  Doris Wade (Dee), the owner, wasn’t there the night I was but the charming Mekkie, (bartender/hostess/waitress) waited on us and the service was excellent.  DJ Huggie was spinning a great selection of HipHop and R&B keeping the vibe good.  it’s one of those spots that when your finished eating dinner you want to stay longer and just hang out.  Good crowd, good food, good music and good drinks.  Dee mentioned to me that she is working out a House Music night for either Thursday or Sunday nights in the near future.  Stay tuned I’ll keep you posted when it’s definite.

Im happy to see how successful Questan’s is.  The front of the Restaurant says “Live, love & laugh” with a message like that how can you not be successful. Definitely left me wanting to go back for more.  Another great addition to Harlem.

Take advantage of “Eat Shop Play HARLEM this month for Restaurant & Retail.  Questan’s is one of the Restaurants included on this list which offers a Prix Fixe menu for $20.10 from February 15, 2010 - March 15, 2010.  *Questan’s also delivers.

Last of the Harlem Lots

By HarlemGal

HarlemCondoLife

HarlemCondoLife (110th Street & Manhattan Avenue)

When I first moved to Harlem a few years back there were a ton of empty/abandon lots.  I am finding lately that these lots are now becoming extinct and there are only a few left – at least in Central Harlem. The last of the Harlem lots are within a one mile radius.

There is the lot on the corner 110th Street and Manhattan Avenue. There was a building there for years-now its an empty lot. Head east on 110th Street making a left onto Frederick Douglass Boulevard and there is another empty lot between 112th Street and 113th. Keep going down FDB and there is an another abandon lot at 117th Street.

HarlemCondoLife

HarlemCondoLife (FDB btw 112th & 113th St.)

Why am I focused on these empty lots? Simple. I believe these lots won’t stay empty for long. They will face the same destiny as the space on 114th Street & FDB, 115th & FDB, or 122nd & FDB.  To my knowledge, all of the new construction mentioned were previously abandoned lots. Now we can speculate forever on what’s going to happen with these new buildings whether they will go condo, rental or vacant, but the truth of the matter is space does not last long especially when its located near two wonderful parks, such as Central Park North and Morningside Heights Park. What I see every day on my way to work: Harlem’s structural landscape continues to change even during the most volatile of times. I believe the old adage applies to these empty lots: “take a picture, it last longer.”

By HarlemGal

98.7 Kiss FM is broadcasting on Frederick Douglass Boulevard today between 113th and 114th Streets in Central Harlem. They are promoting the new branch for MetroPCS, which we blogged about a few weeks ago. To go along with their promotion, they are raffling off tickets to a reggie concert. If you want to win concert tickets, stop by! They will be there all day today!

MetroPCS coming to Central Harlem

By HarlemGal
When you walk the streets of Harlem ya never know what you will discover. Today, it’s a new wireless company coming to Harlem. Apparently MetroPCS is opening up a branch office in The Gateway Condominium Building, which is on Frederick Douglass Blvd. between 113th and 114th Street. And they’re looking for managers and sales reps…immediately! If you are interested in employment with MetroPCS, here is their email and fax: lharris@wirelessuniv.com and 1-678-205-0312! Give them a call!

And to MetroPCS, welcome to Harlem!

Harlem Condo Alert: The Alycia Completely Sold?

HarlemCondoLife

HarlemCondoLife

By HarlemGal,
I walk down 114th Street between Frederick Douglass and Manhattan Avenue all the time heading to Morningside Heights Park. When you take this walk, you see construction every where in this area. Just the other day I noticed the netting/scaffolding all over one particular lot was now down and the new structure donned a big banner with the words The Alycia. I checked out their website and according to The Alycia, this place will be condos with all the trimmings of a new home.  The site also claims all units are SOLD, which is quite impressive given current market conditions. Maybe that explains when I walked by the other day, the big banner existed no more.

HarlemCondoLife

HarlemCondoLife

We’re not surprised folks purchased condos in this area and plan to move to Central Harlem. After all, HarlemCondoLife lives and blogs in Harlem. My only lingering question is when were these units sold – a year or six months ago?  We called the real estate company representing this building for further details.  No word yet. However, if you know something before or if they get back to us, please chime in.
