“A battle lost or won is easily described, understood, and appreciated, but the moral growth of a great nation requires reflection, as well as observation, to appreciate it.”

As I was walking home this evening, I noticed this attractive marquis on the southwest corner of 116th and Frederick Douglass Blvd.  Silvana will be a “cafe boutique” featuring Middle Eastern food, international goods, and live music. Their website is not up yet but rumor has it that this latest addition to Frederick Douglass’ restaurant row  is scheduled to open later this month.

Harlem Corner Gas Station (HP)

Several articles surfaced today in the papers and on local news channels about the corner Harlem gas station located on 11oth Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard.  This is an unfortunate situation that the city will most likely end up winning.  With this prime real estate location a business is vulnerable to the city and eager real estate developers.  The HP Harlem gas station is getting pressure from the city to sell.  This location would provide incredible central park and unobstructed downtown city views.  The Owner Carmie Elmore, and a partner took over the gas station in 1981.  The pressure has increased for them to sell and their response to that is Hands off!  Situations like this have often occurred with the city in the past and if history repeats itself it does not look good for the  gas station owner.  Read more from one of several articles about the ongoing battle here Lucianne.com.

The story was big enough to hit NY1  today.  Twenty employees would lose their jobs if the gas station was sold.  The neighborhood has changed with the booming businesses on Frederick Douglass Boulevard.  What once was an undesirable property now has become the hottest piece of Real Estate on Central Park.  I’ve stopped by this 24 hour market many times at night all the years I’ve lived here.  I do not own a car but the need for a gas station at this location can easily be supported by the continuos flow of cars and cabs 24 hours.  They also do repairs here which is very convenient.  I imagine the gas station on 96th Street will double in business if the 110th Street gas station closes but that location is small, on a hill and very dangerous.

We will have to wait and see how this plays out but undoubtedly big business will win in the end.

I was flipping through newspapers from this week and came across a huge congratulatory advertisement in The New York Times regarding our very own Harlemite, Marcus Samuelsson. Apparently on May 12, Samuelsson was awarded the Frederick Douglass Award by The New York Urban League at their annual Spring dinner. “The Frederick Douglass Award acknowledges and honors leaders in the private and public sector whose contributions to society serve to eliminate racial barriers and promote opportunities for the disadvantage.”

One word comes to mind: Wow! We at HCL say double congrats and what an honor!

As a blogger, I am constantly on the internet using various search terms to help with blog posts about Harlem. I decided to take some of those search terms I use frequently about Harlem and apply them to YouTube’s search stories, which allows users to create their very own Google commercial on a topic of their choice. After several hours of reviewing a ton of search terms about Harlem, I narrowed them down. The result a video titled: Your Gateway to Harlem! Check it out below!

Today is the first day that Frederick Douglass Circle in Harlem is available to the public. Yes, it is officially open after more than seven years in the making.Wow. It’s about time and long overdue. According to a worker at Cafe Amrita, City workers were taking down the barriers last night around 1 AM.

Thank you to whomever said or convinced the City to open the circle now. Nice timing. Harlemites can enjoy the Circle during the summer months and on. I was out there today looking at every aspect of the Circle. It looks fabulous.

Below are pictures of locals looking around Harlem’s brand new Frederick Douglass Circle or better yet, come by and see it for yourself! Take the B/C to 110th Street/Catherdral Parkway or the 2/3 to 110 Street/Central Park North.
