Walking on Frederick Douglass Boulevard and 123rd yesterday, we noticed that the butcher paper is off the windows of Fuel and it seems almost ready to go. We can’t wait to try it!

Their website is not quite launched thepark112.com but things are looking ambitious for The Park 112 the last couple of days after taking this new photo of their interior. We haven’t posted much about this “coming soon” business on FDB/8th Ave but we have been following the postings of our fellow bloggers and the media. According to Harlem Bespoke and others, The Park 112 was originally set to open in Spring of 2013. As this photo (above) shows the paper is now removed from the windows and finishing touches are looking more advanced. We will continue to monitor their progress and keep you posted on opening dates as soon as we find out more. With neighbors like Zoma, 67 Orange Street & The 5 and Diamond this new Champagne Bar & Restaurant will be in great company on Harlem Restaurant Row.

Southern Crispy Yard Bird with Honey Cayenne Sauce
Harlem Condo Life had the pleasure of joining the owner of Chocolàt, Leon Ellis and their new Executive Chef, Joseph Guitierrez, along with fellow bloggers for a VIP Tasting at Chocolàt Restaurant Lounge in Harlem this week.
Joseph Guitierrez previous talents include The Coffee Shop, where he worked as Executive Sous Chef, a stint as Chef de Cuisine at Luna Park and Rockin’ River Ranch in Sedona, Arizona where he opened a bed and breakfast. Chef Joseph and Leon Ellis were kind enough to allow us to sample items from the new menu.
Short Rib Empanadas
If you are not already familiar with Chocolàt they are located on Harlem Restaurant Row in a large windowed corner space nicely situated on Frederick Douglass Boulevard and 120th Street. The warm mocha and creme colored dining room has a very loft-like airy feel both spacious and inviting. This 120-seat room is a great space for group get-togethers as it can easily accommodate large parties. In addition they have a cool private dining (VIP room) which is available for reservation upon request.
Joseph Guittierez and Leon Ellis
Leon Ellis who opened his first business MOCA Lounge in 2003, has proven his staying power as he now owns three successful businesses in Harlem all of which happen to be located on FDB. Chocolat Restaurant Lounge, which I would describe as an upscale dining destination has had many celebrities visit such as Tina Fey, Sherri Shepherd, Victor Cruz, Mike Tyson, Danny Glover and Angela Bassett just to name a few.
It was a very hot and humid night this past Tuesday in Harlem and I was immediately pleased with the cool air conditioned room and the inviting bar. The new Chef introduced himself to everyone and then proceeded to bring out the new items. Those of us dining for this event all had our specific favorites. First I’d like to mention that everything was delicious and the group of us dining all seemed pleasantly surprised with the items. One of the entrees, The Southern Crispy Yard Bird was a favorite with the group. However, my favorite chicken dish was the Jerk Chicken with Rice and Peas and Sweet Plantains. VERY spicy, I loved it.
Jerk Chicken (spicy)
Another stand out entree for me was the Grilled Scottish Salmon with Sautéed Kale and Mango Coulis. Delicious, healthy, lite and refreshing for a warm summer night. All of the appetizers were tasty. My favorites were the Shrimp and Watermelon Salad and the Short Rib Empanadas. The shrimp with the crumbled goat cheese, basil and lemon vinaigrette over the watermelon really did it for me. A nice summery blend of flavors. As a meat lover I could have had several of the empanadas but restrained to just having one. Flavorful and well executed. The desserts we sampled were the Jamaican Black Cake a la Mode and Pastellas with Guava and Queso. Depending on what you are in the mood for I would recommend either one. But I thought that the Pastellas with Guava and Queso served warm were amazing. The perfectly baked pastry with the warmed quava filling is a new favorite of mine. A fellow diner said that the Jamaican Black Cake was her favorite item of the night. I suggest that you visit Chocolàt and decide for yourself.
Please read more on Joseph Gutierrez (Executive Chef) below and view the new menu at Chocolàt in Harlem.
Chocolàt offers Brunch, Lunch and Dinner Service Monday through Sunday.
Famous Sesame Calamari Salad
Shrimp and Watermelon Salad
Blackened Mahi Mahi Satay
Dessert – Pastellas with Guava and Queso (served warm) Delicious!

We first blogged a month ago about a new Indian restaurant coming to FDB in Harlem. The owner reached out to us yesterday and it appears they will be opening as soon as the week of May 29th. Next week! Exact day yet to be determined depending on the completion of their construction, but they are hoping for Wednesday.
Maharaja Palace also located on the East Side on Madison Avenue, will offer a large selection of classic Indian dishes. For all of you vegetarians out there they also offer a large selection of vegetarian dishes. Reasonably priced for the standards with the priciest items on the menu their Tandori specialties which is normally the case with Indian restaurants. Here is a peek at their Tandori Specialties
They are located in the old Questans space on Frederick Douglass Boulevard (westside of the ave.) between 114th and 115th Streets. With Jado Sushi across the street, Melbas on the adjacent corner, Frederick Bistro Cafe, Harlem Food Bar and Bier International less than a block away, Maharaja Palace will now add a much needed Indian restaurant into the mix. Stay tuned for more information, photos and our new menu review from HarlemCondoLife.com next week after their grand opening.
NOTE: They will start their home delivery service the day of opening, scheduled for May 29th.

As I was walking home this evening, I noticed this attractive marquis on the southwest corner of 116th and Frederick Douglass Blvd. Silvana will be a “cafe boutique” featuring Middle Eastern food, international goods, and live music. Their website is not up yet but rumor has it that this latest addition to Frederick Douglass’ restaurant row is scheduled to open later this month.

An exciting new culinary addition to the neighborhood –set to open this January ( http://www.mns.com/content/press_archives/2012/12/08/harlems-2280-fdb-welcomes-mediterranean-restaurant-savann/) –seems to have met a temporary delay. Last month we were thrilled when saw signs for the impending opening of Mediterranean restaurant Savann at 2280 FDB, but work looks to be suspended for the time being and a sign in the window alludes that it may be a construction permit issue.
Savann is an outpost of a popular Upper West Side Turkish restaurant that closed this past summer. A New York Times review said : “When Savann opened a few years ago, it was like a dream come true for Upper West Siders who had yearned for a simple, reasonably priced restaurant that served not-so-simple contemporary bistro food. Savann was just such a place, with ambitious yet delicious dishes like roasted pumpkin soup with olive oil, perfectly cooked wild mushroom risotto, and grilled duck breast with polenta…”
Cem Yildiz, Manager of Savann told mns.com in December: “The owner, Galip Ozbek, and I have lived in Harlem since 2007, and have enjoyed watching the local community flourish…We’re excited to offer Harlemites authentic Mediterranean cuisine.”
Hopefully they can work out these issues and open soon because we can’t wait!!

240 Manhattan Avenue
We have all been watching and waiting as we previously posted Construction Begins on 110th and Manhattan back in May of 2012, and now things seem to be taking off at a rapid speed. The name of this project is 240 Manhattan Avenue (by owner: 110 Manhattan Ave Equities LLC.)
This future 22 story condominium on 110th Street and Manhattan Avenue has had a lot of activity lately and the structure is now visible from behind the fence. After speaking with a gentleman on the listed telephone number at the construction site, he informed me that the building is still scheduled to be completed by January, 2014.
A rendering of the new condo
With this prime location on West 110th and Manhattan Ave., 240 Manhattan Avenue will provide views of both Central Park and Morningside Park. It is located just one block away from Frederick Douglass Boulevard Harlem’s Restaurant Row. There is also a subway entrance on the block as well as Central Market across the street, a Dry Cleaners, Cafe Amrita and many other conveniences all within an arms reach.
Harlem Condo Life will continue to watch, wait and see if they reach their expected completion date of January, 2014.

We were the first to christen 8th ave from 110th to 125th Harlem Restaurant Row. We are pleased to write that Harlem is part of yet another trend. Harlem is now a premiere destination for the filming of all sorts – from music videos to tv/cable programming, movies, etc.
Just today Elementary was setup to film on 114th between 8th and 9th.

Elementary is an American TV crime drama series that premiered on CBS on September 27, 2012. It presents a contemporary update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s character Sherlock Holmes set in the United States.
