Recently the New York Times featured a piece on the explosive growth of Frederick Douglass Boulevard.  It’s a great piece on what it was, what it is, and where it’s going.

Mentioned are many  events, people and places we at HarlemCondoLife.com (@HarlemHCL) have reported on over the years, including: Willie Kathryn Suggs, Harlem Tavern, VinateríaArtimus Construction, Millennium Dance Company, One Morningside Park, Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, Londel’s Supper Club, New York Sports Clubs gym, Starbucks, St. Nicholas Parks, MODSquad Cycles, Zoma, Jado Sushi, Lido, Bier International, Frederick Douglass Academy.

There is going to be another wine and dinner pairing at Lido this coming Tuesday, September 24th at 7:30 pm.  Customers and clients have been loving these special events that Lido have been hosting lately.  We wanted to let our readers know here at HCL about this event and to help get the word out for those wine lovers and foodies who may not be aware of Lido’s wine and dinner gatherings.

Wine educator and sommelier, Andrea Wobensmith will take guests through the wines and help them learn more about pairing tips, grapes, differences in growing practices and more, all in an intimate and relaxed setting. HarlemGuy and Harlemista spent a few hours at Harlem Pop-Up ‘Holiday Bazaar’ today. We loved the huge Christmas tree out front, the cavernous interior space, the aura creativity that permeated the space, and the passion of the people representing the products and services on display. Highlights included learning about the new community bank Spring Bank, learning about artist Garry Grant, meeting the force behind artist AFineLyne and her great cards and paintings, catching up with the founder of Harlem Tavern and the folks from Lido, meeting Ebony of mikomyco and seeing their beautiful scarves in person, seeing the amazing artwork in the form of cards by Willie Mitchell, and the wonderful wares from bebenoir.

We love these Harlem Pop-Up events and look forward to the next one. Hoping they continue at least once a month. If you missed the first one check out our post here; Harlem Pop-Up ‘Green Market.’

Hurricane Irene last year failed to live up to the doomsday expectations for the city (thank goodness!), but that’s no reason to be  unprepared for Hurricane Sandy this time around.

We stupidly saw –but didn’t buy– a large flashlight in the 125th street Duane Reade yesterday when we were getting preliminary supplies, when we went back this morning all flashlights had vanished… Got the bright idea of going to United Hardware on FDB to buy an electric lantern but first we popped into Rite Aid to see what emergency supplies we could acquire there, not even knowing exactly what we wanted. We wasted 20 minutes standing in line with 2 unneeded LED powered candles as there were no flashlights , and just as we got to the front of the line, Marcus Samuelsson rushed in –what is he buying??? Harlem’s Superstar Chef must know what to buy!!–but we were so close to checkout, we couldn’t  follow him (plus that’s stalkerish anyway). Finally onto United Hardware where we were informed that they had sold out of the last battery lantern 15 minutes beforehand. All out of flashlights too.

Then we fought our way through the throngs at Best Yet–the management is trying their best to have some control and process and they had extra staff in place to facilitate checkout which is great, but the lines are long. Back out on the street we noticed brunch in full swing at many local restaurants–New Yorkers are so irrepressible –and lots of tourists nonchalantly smiling, strolling and even riding rental bikes up FDB, boy are they going to be in for a surprise later…

Only one more thing to buy–actually the most important supply, wine. The Winery is trying to keep their regular hours tonight they say, but they’ll be open at least until 6.

Everyone please be safe and smart during this sustained storm.
