Island Spice & Southern Cuisine HARLEM

By HarlemHouse
Another  Mom and Pops shop in Harlem that has been one of my favorites for years is Island Spice and Southern Cuisine.  I like supporting our local businesses that have been around and doing well for a long time.  Island Spice is no exception.  No thrills here – just modest decor, small quarters and good inexpensive food.

Any given afternoon if you stop by to eat for lunch you will see locals lined up ordering food to go.  Certain items are cooked to order and other dishes are buffet style that you select to your liking with sides.  The entree comes with rice and peas (or just rice) and two side dishes.  A common lunch is the stewed chicken entree with rice and peas with sides of plantains and collard greens.  This very filling and tasty entree comes out to a mere $6 for the small order.  Medium entree with two sides is $8.50.  Some of the dishes and entrees that I recommend are the Fish and Chips, Jerk Chicken, Mac & Cheese, Ox Tail, Curry Shrimp, Pepper Steak or just a couple authentic Jamaican Beef Patties with a bottle of Ting.

I love spots like this. It is one of the type businesses that makes Harlem great.

Here you can enjoy great authentic Jamaican and southern cuisine and feel good about supporting a small local business.

  1. Hey VP you’re welcome. No they don’t deliver just take out. But you can call ahead to save time and just swing by to pick up. The jerk chicken is great.
