August in NYC means HARLEM WEEK, a unique celebration of the history, culture and creativity of the Harlem community. This year marks the 35th anniversary of HARLEM WEEK which started as a one day celebration in 1974 and has grown to a month long extravaganza that showcases Harlem’s past, present and future.
The official kick-off was last Sunday at Grant’s Tomb: “A Great Day in Harlem” featured dance, theatre, gospel, jazz, fashion and R & B. An amazing array of events are scheduled for the next four weeks including seminars on economic development, special events for seniors and children, a health fair, an art tour and many, many more. My favorite event last year was “Uptown Saturday Night”, a day long outdoor festival along West 135th Street with traditional and exotic foods, handmade crafts, local artists and vendors and a series of live performances featuring both national headliners and emerging talent.
