The School of American Ballet (SAB) will hold special free auditions for boys and girls ages 6 to 10 in Harlem on Friday, April 26, at Harlem School of the Arts, 645 St. Nicholas Avenue.  The auditions will take place at 6:30 p.m. for ages 6 and 7, and at 7:00 p.m. for ages 8-10.

SAB’s auditioners will look for young girls and boys who are interested in pursuing focused ballet training.  Previous dance training is not necessary, but children must be 6 by Sept. 1, 2013, to audition for the 2013-14 Winter Term. Children selected for admission will begin classes at the School’s Lincoln Center headquarters this fall. Boys attend tuition-free as part of a special Boys Program and financial aid is available for girls.

The School of American Ballet has been the leading academy for classical ballet training in the United States since its founding in 1934 by Lincoln Kirstein and the renowned choreographer George Balanchine.  Over the past 79 years, the Manhattan-based school—which is both the official academy of New York City Ballet and a constituent member of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts—has enrolled some 17,000 students, with more than 2,000 having become professional dancers at New York City Ballet and countless other companies around the U.S. and abroad.  Today, SAB-trained dancers appear on the rosters of more than 65 U.S. and one dozen international companies.  New York-area children enrolled at SAB are featured annually in New York City Ballet’s beloved production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center.
