City Summer Skin Savers

Woman with damp face covering from sun.

Thankfully we have a slight respite from the oppressive summer weather, but it’s sure to be back. And the intense heat and humidity do no favors to our skin. Temperatures rise , the pores open up and oil and sweat are drawn right to the surface, smearing makeup and causing breakouts. A good morning shower is no match for a sultry subway station. While it’s still cool outside, we’ve compiled a few natural tips to combat the perils of the Urban Summer.

Baking Soda: Many makeup artists swear by baking soda as it helps minimize pores. Use baking soda sprinkled with your facial cleanser 2 to 3 times a week to slough off dead skin cells (be careful–don’t overdo do it and irritate your skin). Also 2 or 3 scoops of baking soda in the bath soothes heat rash and prickly heat.

Ice Cubes: After you wash in the morning, glide ice gently along your face for a few seconds to cool skin and tighten pores.

Aloe Vera: A coworker swears by her aloe vera plant and raves about its prevention of oily skin. Apply it both morning and night after washing and drying your face, letting it absorb into the skin for a couple of minutes. (Ladies it also acts as a great primer under foundation). If you are skittish about using the actual plant, use 100% pure, clear gel– not the artificially colored green ones.

Plain Yogurt: Yogurt soothes sunburnt skin by working as an anti-inflammatory and heat remover. It also makes an excellent cooling mask for face, adding enzymes and moisture while reducing pore size.

Cornstarch: For years now, researchers have been suggesting a link between talcum powder and lung and ovarian cancers. Talc lodges in pores until it’s abraded out. Also most “pure cornstarch” powders contain “fragrance” which can contain xeno-estrogens. Use food-grade cornstarch instead–it’s cheap, natural, fragrance free and effective.
