For the last time this summer, you can go west coast swing dancing in Harlem. West coast swing is one of my favorite dances – sort of a cross between Lindy-style swing and salsa. It is danced to all kinds of music – R & B, pop, blues, rock, even hip-hop and country.
The event is run by Paula Wilson – an amazing dancer, in partnership with Riverside Park as part of their Summer on the Hudson programming. I saw Paula & her partner Ken Kreshtool perform at a party a couple of weeks ago at Stepping Out Studios. What a treat! I was lucky enough to get a dance with Ken, who is a terrific leader with a lot of musicality and some very smooth moves. The dancing goes from 6 pm – 9 pm this Saturday, September 28th at West Harlem Piers Park (West 125th St. and the Hudson River). Paula will teach a lesson at about 7 pm and the entire event is free. If you know West Coast, come and show your stuff; if you’ve never done the dance, come out and give it a try!
