Edelman and McInerney to receive 2010 Harlem Renaissance Award

Marian Wright Edelman —Founder and President of the Children’s Defense Fund, and Thomas J. McInerney —Chief Operating Officer of ING Insurance and Chairman of the ING Foundation, will be honored at the Harlem Renaissance Day of Commitment Leadership Breakfast on Wednesday, June 2, 2010.

Established in 1995, the Harlem Renaissance Day of Commitment celebrates the history, culture and indomitable spirit of the Harlem Community.  The Leadership Breakfast is a fundraising event for the Abyssinian Development Corporation (ADC).  This year’s event will take place in Shepard Hall at City College of the City University of New York.  New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, along with hundreds of New York’s most influential business, civic, philanthropic and

The Abyssinian Development Corporation is the nationally renowned not-for-profit organization launched more than 20 years ago by one of Harlem’s most famous churches, the Abyssinian Baptist Church.  This comprehensive community development corporation has played an important role in revitalizing the socioeconomic fabric of the Harlem community throughout its impressive history of developing quality affordable housing, spearheading commercial development, fostering education, strengthening families and building community capacity through civic engagement. ADC’s Education Movement, a national model for private investment in public education, sponsors the award-winning Abyssinian Head Start Program, the Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School, and the Thurgood Marshall Academy for Learning and Social Change (middle and high school).
