If you want to see some world class jump rope, check out the Double Dutch Holiday Classic this Sunday, December 7th from 1 – 4 pm at Harlem’s APOLLO Theatre.  If you’ve never seen competitive Double Dutch, you are in for a treat.  The classic schoolyard game played with two ropes turned in eggbeater fashion by two players while a third player jumps was revitalized in the mid-seventies by David A. Walker, then a New York City Police Community Affairs Detective, and his partner Detective Ulysses Williams.  They turned Double Dutch into a competitive team sport and held the first tournament, right here in New York City, in 1974.  Over the past 35 years, competitive Double Dutch has expanded with thousands of young people from schools and community centers throughout the United States competing at national and international events.

doubledutchjumpers_in_command_051This year’s DD Holiday Classic is dedicated to David Walker who passed away earlier this year.  Come and watch the world’s best performing the Fusion Freestyle approach that Walker invented.  The event is sponsored by the National Double Dutch League.
