Levain Bakery plans to bake cookies and bread in Harlem

By HarlemGal
If you have walked by the old Tribal Spears Gallery space recently, which was at 2167 Frederick Douglass Blvd., and saw a lot of construction happening, it’s the working crew for Levain Bakery, the Upper Westside and Hampton’s bakery. They are opening up their first Harlem location after the new year – hopefully in the first quarter of 2011.

I spoke with a staffer from their 167 West 74th Street location about the expansion. I asked why are they coming to Harlem? Levain Bakery said “they see Harlem as an emerging community and it’s a community they believe in.”

Very sweet words and it seems consistent with their product. Check out their website to learn more about Levain Bakery. Based on their site, their cookies look yummy. And the bread looks quite good as well. Harlemites will soon have another place to get a sugar fix in Harlem! Sign me up for that gym membership…quick!

  1. Can’t wait… it’s really impressive that they chose our neighborhood to have only their 2nd location in NYC. I think it speaks volumes about the quality of the neighborhood and the still reasonable commercial rents! Three cheers for FDB and Harlem!

  2. I just think this is tremendous for this neighborhood, but wonder how they plan to use all that space? Have you seen the UWS place. It is small.

  3. The cookies aren’t cheap but they’re massive. And exceptional. Everything else is good too, but it’s hard to focus on the rest when you smell the cookies. Should help increase milk sales in the area… I hear the cinnamon-butter brioche is tremendous too. Can’t wait! (Visit the 74th St. location to see what’s in store and tell them to speed up the work…)

  4. I love Levain’s cookies as well, but no one mentioned that one cookie is $4.00! kind of steep for anyone in the city.

  5. Levain’s cookies are to die for – the cookies are more like shortbread than standard cookies! Their Cinnamon buns were also featured in Oprah not to long ago as a fave of Kelly Ripa’s fave. 🙂

  6. DO you think I can count on bagles and lox too? Is that too much to ask for? I hope so much it happens..
